Powerfully acted cinematic theatre
Julia is a contemporary, idiosyncratic and sultry adaptation of the classic play by the Swedish playwright August Strindberg. Whereas the 19th-century Strindberg used classical theatre to outline the difficult but fiery relationship between Julie, a young woman of aristocratic birth, and Jean, a stablehand, the theatre-maker Christiane Jatahy prefers to make use of the film camera to zoom in on the relationship between male (Jelson) and female (Julia) in present-day Brazil. The two powerful actors are absolutely riveting: it is rare that theatre characters are portrayed so intimate and convincing. As a result, Julia not only questions the relationship between film and theatre, but also the relationship between fiction and reality. Jatahy’s work is a striking example of the way in which South America is rediscovering itself as a breeding ground for innovative theatre.
